Dr. Karavani graduated at the University of Antwerp in 1987, where is specialized in Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery at the University Hospital UZA. After graduation he was appointed as the consultant for dermatological surgery at the University of Antwerp till 2010. He obtained an additional degree in cosmetic sciences at the University of Brussels (VUB) in 1989 and is a founding member of the Belgian Association of Dermato-Cosmetic Sciences (BADECOS). From 1993 till 1999 he was elected twice as President of the Benelux Society for Dermatological Surgery (VDC). Dr. Karavani is co-author of the official Dutch textbook of cosmetic surgery (June 2000). He was part of the editorial board of two dermatological scientific journals.
His love for research started early. In 1985 he worked on the Kentanserine project, commissioned by Dr. Paul Janssen from Janssen Pharmaceutica (now Johnson & Johnson), and in 1987 on the research into buflomedil for the Abbott company.
In 2000, he and his team embarked on an extensive research project on skin analysis and skin aging that led to the discovery of the skin aging algorithms, displayed in the skin code. In 2006, those findings were recognized as a patent. His research project led ultimately to the skin analysis method, Your Skin Type™. Since 2008, Dr. Karavani has been applying this technology in the research and development of new skincare techniques, both in the field of customized active cosmetics and in the field of high-tech treatments.
In his private clinic for dermatology, aesthetic surgery, laser surgery and cosmetology he is employing more than 25 highly educated professionals (www.drkaravani.com). He is the author of several textbooks, the latest of which is Your Skin Type, on skin typology and personalized skincare. In 2018 he published a book on Natural Medicine, Your Body Type. His newly founded Training Center for Skin Experts (TCSE.be) is dedicated to research and sharing of practical ‘hands-on’ experiences in the field of skincare.Dr. Karavani is a leading expert and well-sought speaker on international congresses.
