Prof. Avner Shemer is a senior dermatologist in the dermatology department at the Sheba Tel HaShomer Medical Center. Prof. Shemer is a graduate of the Tel Aviv University Medical School.
He completed his residency in the department of dermatology and venereology at Rambam Hospital in Haifa and his specialization in dermatology and venereology in 1994.
During the course of his residency in the dermatology department at Rambam Hospital Prof. Shemer did a specialization in mycology at the Rambam laboratory. Over the course of 1994 Prof. Shemer received professional specialization in the field of mycology (the field that deals with fungal diseases of the skin) at Guy’s Hospital in London with Prof. Roderick Hay.
From 1994 to the present Prof. Shemer has worked at the Sheba Tel HaShomer Medical Center and serves as the supervisor and grader for the exams of students specializing in dermatology in order to receive their certification as specialists in dermatology and venereology.
Prof. Shemer serves today as a clinical professor of Dermatology at the University of Tel Aviv, and likewise founded and established the department of dermato-mycology in Israel and conducts an annual dermato-mycology conference attended by various professors from around the world who are on leading experts in the field.
Goals of the department of dermato-mycology are many and varied and deal with different dermato-mycological subjects such as nail diseases (nail fungus, ingrown nails, and benign and neoplastic diseases of the nail bed and/or the nail root). Assorted innovations relating to research methods, diagnostic methods, different treatments of dermato-mycological diseases in combination with other diseases, the use of advanced molecular biological techniques on “sun” fungus and other fungal diseases as discussed as well as new antifungal treatments and/or combined techniques and treatments for different dermato-mycological diseases.
Prof. Avner Shemer is the Chairman of the Department of Dermato-Mycology and Nail Disorders in Israel.
He also actively participates in national and international conferences and is academically active in diverse fields while focusing on fungal skin diseases and various nail disorders.
Prof. Avner Shemer is a member and regular lecturer at national and international conferences including the largest and most important, the AAD Conference.
